It’s intoxicating. The subtle breeze. The warm sun. The slight buzzing from the looseness of life, or perhaps the delicious cocktails you’ve been sipping.
We’re back to summer in the UK and it couldn’t feel better. The weather is idyllic and the town and country are both chirping. Whether you’re heading to the coast, or to boat the Thames, or a relaxing garden party, great drinks make memories.
That’s why we at The Whisky World put together our guide to summer drinking. Chalk it up to a love for the finer things or a deep experience with spirits. We wholeheartedly believe these cocktails, spirits, and mixers will pair fantastic with your summer plans and spontaneous surprises.
So grab a glass and some ice and read on. Below is our curated collection of our preferred summer drinks. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.
Green Garden Cocktail
Idyllic days call for iconic drinks. Our modern take on the classic French 75 pairs, well, pear with complements of bright and crisp compliments. Featuring the lush Golden Eight Williams Pear Liqueur, and Tanqueray Rangpur Gin (distilled with the rare, smooth Rangpur lime), the Green Garden Cocktail calls for balmy afternoons, bright skies, and plenty of company (did we mention this makes an excellent punch as well?).
30ml Tanqueray Rangpur Gin
15ml simple syrup
15ml Lemon Juice
Top With Sparkling Wine
Garnish with a twist of lemon.
A Gentleman’s Cure
Like London itself, great cocktails balance deep heritage and daring ingenuity. A Gentleman’s Cure may just be that. Smoky, spicy, and full of character, this cocktail was built for the hardworking Blighty. We chose Compass Box’s Great King Street Artist’s Blend Scotch for its spicy full body. We chose Edinburgh Rhubarb & Ginger Liqueur as a wink-and-nod to the timeless English bev.
60ml Compass Box Great King Street Artist’s Blend Blended Scotch
15ml honey-ginger syrup
15ml lemon juice
Garnish with candied ginger
Prefer the traditional? Swap out the Rhubarb and Ginger Liqueur with a float of Laphroaig 10 Yr for a tried-and-true Penicillin.
Like This? You may also like these selections from the Dalmore:
Dalmore 18 — Aged in American Oak and Sherry Casks, this dram is chocolatey and raisined with a hint of vanilla and black pepper. Sip this gem slowly.
Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve — Hurry up and get this excellent whisky while you still can. This buttery and bready Highland malt halted production in 2009, only fanning the flames of this cult classic. Smoke cigars? The Cigar Malt Reserve is your perfect pairing.
Safe to say: the Pimm’s Cup is a bonafide staple. Londoners have imbibed the bold classic for three centuries–so much so, the Pimm’s Cup is synonymous with our culture.
When working with such gravitas, it’s better to stay true to form. Our recipe is deceptively simple, calling for pure balance and reverence. We snuck a fair pour of Tanqueray Flor De Sevilla Gin (a bittersweet and herbaceous gin distilled with Seville oranges) to complement the Pimm’s existing excellence. And garnishes. Lots of garnishes.
45ml Pimm’s # 1
15ml lemon juice
7.5ml simple syrup
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Garnish with fresh strawberries, lemon zest, mint, and cucumber.
Short on Time? We Got You Covered.
Gone are the days of bad premade cocktails. Sophisticated distilleries are reviving the reviled category with premium ingredients and a mixologist’s approach to cocktail making. Trust these selections for a shortcut to a quality buzz.
Edinburgh Distillery made a name for itself in the notoriously old-world gin category. Founded in 2010 in Scotland’s Capital City, Edinburgh Distillery perfected the London Dry and set its eyes on award-winning execution of unique styles and flavours. Rest assured: the canned cocktail boasts some of this century’s best gin. Our favorite is the classic Edinburgh Gin & Tonic. But you can’t go wrong with the Edinburgh Rhubarb Gin & Ginger & Ginger Ale, an-on-the-mark riff on the gin and ginger.
London’s own Tails Cocktails is a popular choice. The young company achieved its goal to produce top-shelf, premium, cocktails with an accessible approach. Trust Tails for great ingredient and even greater experiences. The Tails Bacardi Mojito is a minty-fresh summer go-to. (Don’t worry–it features both Bacardi and a true-Cuban recipe).
And who doesn’t love the frothy pick-me-up of an Espresso Martini? The Tails Espresso Martini (featuring 42 Below Vodka) rivals the rich concoctions shaken up anywhere in the city. It’s an ideal call for dinner parties.
